Brimfield and Its People

Brimfield and Its People: Life in a Western Reserve Township 1816-1941

Out of stock

This book recreates the settling, largely by New Englanders, of Town 2, Range 9, in the Western Reserve and the township’s development in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. it draws upon letters, diaries, and records of representative citizens to reveal the hardships and rewards of frontier life, the agony of the Civil War years, and the confidence and optimism that characterized the postwar decades. The focus is on individuals in the agrarian township who knew who they were, where they lived, and what they believed – a heritage new obscure and perhaps generally lost as communities expand and fracture, and as economic, social, and moral complexities confound the descendants of the self-sufficient yet  independent pioneers.
